The U.S. Labor Department added 243,000 new jobs in January, and the unemployment rate fell to 8.3% -- "further evidence that the economy is continuing to heal from the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression," said a statement from Alan B. Krueger, Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers
"It is critical that we continue the economic policies that are helping us to dig our way out of the deep hole that was caused by the recession that began at the end of 2007," Krueger wrote on the White House blog.
Krueger also wrote that, "as the Administration always stresses, it is important not to read too much into any one monthly report; nevertheless, the trend in job market indicators over recent months is an encouraging sign."
The New York Times reports: With a promotional blitz leading up to her Super Bowl performance on Sunday, this weekend — musically — will belong to Madonna.

“American Idol,” iTunes, YouTube, dozens of radio stations and even outdoor billboards around the world will be promoting “Give Me All Your Luvin’,” the first single from her new album, “MDNA,” which will be released by Interscope Records on March 26. In addition, “W.E.,” the new film directed by Madonna, will open in New York and Los Angeles on Friday.
The music video for “Give Me All Your Luvin’,” appropriately football-themed, had a one-minute teaser on “American Idol” on Thursday night, and the full video will become available on YouTube Friday morning. Also on Friday, iTunes will begin selling the single, which features guest spots by Nicki Minaj and M.I.A.; it will also be taking pre-orders for the album.
Starting at 9 a.m. Eastern time, 95 Clear Channel pop stations in the United States will play “Give Me All Your Luvin’” every hour on the hour leading upto the Super Bowl. The song will also be played on Clear Channel stations in Australia and New Zealand, Capital FM stations in Britain, and on the company’s online app, iHeartRadio.
Just in case someone might miss one of those outlets, Clear Channel’s extensive outdoor billboard division will play the music video for the song on more than 1,600 digital displays in the United States, Britain, Singapore and six countries in Europe. In all, the promotion is expected to reach 150 million people.
“We want to reach as many people as possible,” Guy Oseary, Madonna’s manager, said in a phone interview from Indianapolis on Thursday afternoon, where he was preparing for the Super Bowl. “We like to be at the forefront.”
For Clear Channel, the promotion is partly an advertisement for itself and its broad advertising capabilities; the company used a similar “roadblock” strategy when announcing its iHeartRadio concert last summer, and over the last year it has linked dozens of stations to promote new songs by Lady Gaga and Rihanna.
“This is an extension of a massive pop-culture event, creating a stunt where you can’t escape it,” said Tom Poleman, Clear Channel’s president of national programming platforms. “We are a repetition medium.”
