With Chicago police on one corner of 95th and Western, Evergreen Park cops stationed on the other and a helicopter circling above the entire protest areas, thousands of supporters joined retired business icon Ed Gardner Sunday in a silent protest over the lack of blacks on the massive Evergreen Park construction site where Meijer’s and Menards are being built.

Gardner, 87, led the way locking arms with a number of elderly leaders while his supporters chanted, “If we can’t work, nobody works. However, earlier protesters were blocked at 91st and Western by two huge bulldozers and there were barricades placed at 95th and Western that restricted the flow of pedestrian traffic.
