Two days down, about 900 to go.
Former congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. arrived at a federal prison in North Carolina Monday to begin serving his 2.5 year sentence. The 17-year Democratic Representative of Illinois' 2nd District pleaded guilty in August to misusing over $750,000 in campaign funds, resulting in a 30-month sentence.
Jackson Jr.'s wife, former Alderman Sandi Jackson, of Chicago's 7th ward, also pleaded guilty to filing false tax returns and will serve a year in prison after Jackson Jr.'s sentence has ended. The arrangement is due to the couple's young children.
Jackson Jr.'s lawyer has already begun planning for visits from family and friends to Butner, North Carolina, the site of a rather famous federal correctional facility that also currently houses Bernie Madoff, who is serving a 150-year sentence for running a multibillion-dollar Ponzi scheme.
"Jesse asked that his heartfelt thanks be extended again to all of those whose prayers and kindness towards him and his family have helped him through this extraordinarily difficult time," said Jackson Jr.'s lawyer.
In a press release, Jackson Jr. gave a mailing address for those who wish to write to him:
