The newly crowned Miss USA is a black woman from North Carolina. Her name is Cheslie Kryst and she is a lawyer. She works on behalf of prison inmates and that will certainly be part of her platform during her reign.
What is very interesting is that not only is Miss USA black, but Miss America is also a black woman and so is Miss Teen USA. I am so happy that young black girls can see an image of themselves and representation of who they are in these women who worked so hard at having the opportunity to "represent America."
Although hatred and racism is still very much alive in 2019, this gives me hope.
